After running a business in the hospitality industry for a number of years, Ryan obtained his LLB degree and then postgraduate diploma in legal practice in 2009. He was admitted as an attorney in 2010 after completing his articles. Ryan then obtained his LLM degree in commercial law from the University of Cape Town in 2016 while practicing full time, specialising in cyberlaw, advanced law of contract and advanced company law. Another diploma from UCT, in legal compliance management, was obtained in 2017 with a focus on legal, regulatory and enterprise-wide risk management.
Ryan has extensive experience in complex litigation and estates, but his main expertise lies in the commercial realm dealing with corporate commercial matters, the requirements of the Companies Act and company secretarial services, drafting of business-orientated agreements and company formation documents and agreements, business restructuring and legislative and regulatory requirements.
Ryan enjoys reading with a focus on all matters historical, economic and technology orientated, spending time with his young family and enjoying an outdoor lifestyle. His strengths are the ability to objectively assess and solve problems and his weaknesses are good food and wine.
I was admitted as an attorney in 1979 and started practising in the Free State until 1989 where I was a partner with the then Naude’s in Bloemfontein. In 1989 I opened a new practice for Naude’s Ross & Jacobsz in Pretoria, where I focused exclusively on insolvent estates and companies in liquidation where I was appointed as trustee or liquidator. In 1995 I moved to Cape Town and opened an insolvency practice under the name SW Trustees. The said practice was subsequently taken over by Antrust Johannesburg, a division of the then Arthur Andersen Group.
I have been practising as an attorney in Durbanville since 2007, concentrating on deceased estates, curatorship’s and commercial litigation related to those two fields. I am currently appointed as the curator bonis in numerous estates, as well as the executor in various deceased estates.
BCom LLb Stellenbosch 2010 – 2014. Tiaan was admitted as an attorney, notary and conveyancer in 2017. Having completed his articles at the firm, he joined a well-respected auditing firm in Somerset-West before casting off to the Netherlands to work for Alter Domus, a multinational fund and corporate service provider in the alternative investment industry. Tiaan rejoined the firm in 2021 as part of the conveyancing department.
In both his personal and work life, Tiaan strives to conduct himself according to the principles of integrity, respect, and resolve. He aims to be purposeful in his work, and to gain valuable experience from all situations, according to the ingrained conviction that the attitude is more significant than the circumstance.
Natalie obtained her BCom (Law) and LLB degree in 2017 and 2019 respectively. During her BCom (Law) studies, Natalie majored in accounting and financial management, which inspired her inclination towards commercial law. Notwithstanding her desire to focus on commercial law, she completed her articles at a reputable law firm in Cape Town focusing primarily on High Court and Magistrates Court litigation.
Following the conclusion of her articles and admission as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa, Natalie joined Basson Blackburn Inc. in the commercial department as a Professional Assistant.
Natalie is an enthusiastic young attorney who values the importance of client satisfaction. She strives to provide her clients with quality legal advice and to uphold the highest standard of professionalism at all times.
Ilonka obtained a BProc degree and joined the
Legal Department of the SAPS as a legal advisor.
There she gained significant experience in Criminal Law, Labour Law and Civil Law. In 2007 she joined PSG Wealth as head of the Estate Administration department. In September 2019 she resigned and did some traveling. She joined the Basson Blackburn team in 2022. Ilonka is a FISA member subject to a Code of Ethics and must comply with continuing professional development (CPD) requirements to keep her fiduciary knowledge up to date.

After a successful career in the financial services
industry, Hugo continued his studies in 2008 at Stellenbosch University where he obtained his LLB degree (cum laude) in 2011.
He was retained by the law faculty as postgraduate researcher culminating in him lecturing in the fields of Public and Mercantile Law. Hugo thereafter joined an established law firm in Cape Town where he completed his articles and practiced until joining Basson Blackburn in 2022. He specialises in litigation, dispute resolution and general opinion work.
Hugo’s passion for the law and its application is evident in his approach to all his matters. His background in academics as well as the corporate
environment has proven invaluable when dealing with complex legal issues and affords him a unique perspective and broadened source of experience that he draws from when advising his clients. He believes that grit, attention to detail and honesty are the fundamentals for success in both his professional and personal life.
Hester studied BCom LLB at the University of Stellenbosch, obtaining her degrees in 1987 and 1989 respectively, and subsequently obtaining her LLM from UNISA in 1996. She began her career at what is now known as PwC, where she gained 18 years’ experience in estate planning, the administration of deceased estates and trust law. In 2008 she retired as senior manager from the firm and joined Basson Blackburn Inc. as head of the Estate and Fiduciary Services division.
Her reputation in the field, as well as her list of longstanding clients, are a testament to her capabilities.
Caryn completed her BA(LLB) degrees at Stellen-bosch University in 2015 and 2017 respectively, while being actively involved in extracurriculars such as her residence House Committee and working as a library assistant. She joined our team in 2020 and works mainly in Debt Collection under Blackburn Inc., our associated firm, as well as assisting with general litigation matters for both firms.

Magda Nöthnagel obtained her LLB degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2006. She completed her articles at Honey Attorneys, Cape Town and was appointed as an Associate after being admitted as an Attorney with right of appearance in the High Court in May 2008. Magda joined the firm in 2010 and was appointed director in September 2018. Magda leads the litigation department and specializes in commercial litigation and insolvency.
Magda is a dedicated professional who embraces any challenge, striving to ensure that her clients receive professional service of the highest standards etched with a personal touch.
Linka obtained her LLB degree in 2007 and was admitted as an attorney, conveyancer, and notary in 2008, 2009 and 2011 respectively. She has over twenty years’ of experience in conveyancing, and property law and has been involved in a number of large property developments in the Western and Eastern Cape. She heads up the conveyancing department of the firm and specializes in all areas of property law and conveyancing.
Her expertise includes commercial and residential transfers (conventional and sectional title), mortgage bonds (commercial and residential), notarial bonds, developments (sectional title and own title) and various other property transactions (servitudes, consolidations, subdivisions, and notarial contracts).
Deon is one of the original members of Basson Blackburn Inc. Having completed his articles with Fourie Basson and Veldtman in the northern sub- urbs, his friend Hennie Basson invited him to join his burgeoning practice, which led to the establishment of Basson Blackburn Inc. After Hennie’s premature death in 2003, Deon became the managing and only director of the firm. Through his constancy, creativity, and tenacity, he managed not only to preserve the firm but to build it into the leading legal practice it is today.
Deon initially focused on labor law and related litigation but subsequently specialized in all aspects pertaining to property and commercial law. In advising his clients, he is particularly relationship-orientated and dedicated to service. As a result and specifically utilizing his legal skills he serves as trustee on a large number of trusts. His work exhibits the ability to combine expedience, diligence, and commercial acumen without compromising client expectations or business interests. As a leader, Deon embodies what he expects from his colleagues, both regarding inter-personal relations and performance.
As to personal philosophy, Deon stands by the notion that an open hand is never empty.
